Boise Bench area is south of Downtown Boise. It runs from Federal Way West to about Cole Road and goes south to Overland. It gets the name "bench" mainly because this area is suddenly raised in elevation above the Boise river level by about 60 feet. About half of the Boise city is at the river level, and then the Bench area belongs to the other half. This Bench effect was formed from ancient river flows from the Boise River.
The Bench is home to the old Boise Train Depot, Vista Village Shopping Center. It is also close to the Towne Square Mall (which is southwest of Downtown Boise). The Boise Airport is south of the Boise Bench area.
The Boise Bench area has the most affordable homes in Boise. Houses were built usually earlier than most of other parts of Boise. With very mature (sometime too big) trees, it is a pretty nice area to live in. Although most homes may be fairly old, there are some new homes built or old homes get renovated. It has a rich mix of single family homes, townhouses and apartments. It is close to downtown, big old parks and trails along the Boise river and numerouse commercial centers, many people enjoy living in the Bench area.
